India has received 24 Russian anti-aircraft missiles for its defense capabilities
Amid economic sanctions against Russia since 2014 and ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Moscow has supplied New Delhi with 24 Igla-S portable anti-aircraft missile systems and 100 missiles. This delivery, announced on April 9 after occurring over the weekend, was confirmed by India.
The initial delivery comprises 24 Igla-S launchers out of a total agreement for 100, with the first batch procured. Russia is tasked with delivering the remaining 76 launchers and 300 missiles. The procurement holds symbolic significance, aligning with India’s ‘Made in India’ initiative through a licensing agreement for assembly.
India remains the world’s top arms importer, with Russia as its primary source. Amidst the Ukraine conflict, Russia maintains this position, exemplified by the recent Igla-S delivery. The Igla-S’s effectiveness in the Ukrainian conflict has expedited its procurement process. Notably, the system’s upgrade capabilities were demonstrated when Ukrainian forces successfully downed an opposing drone using the Igla.
The Igla-S, also known as the SA-24 Grinch, is a cutting-edge portable surface-to-air system developed by Russia. It stands out with its infrared homing, dual-band seeker, and “soft launch” system. Deployed globally, it finds use in nations maintaining cordial relations with Russia, spanning Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and Africa.
