Amid escalating tensions in the South China Sea, EAM Jaishankar reaffirms India’s strong support To Philippines
During his visit to Manila, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar expressed India’s steadfast support for the Philippines in safeguarding its national sovereignty and emphasized the need for enhanced cooperation between the two nations, especially in defense and security sectors, amidst the escalating maritime tensions between the Philippines and China in the South China Sea.
Jaishankar’s statements came following his meeting with his counterpart Enrique Manalo in Manila. In a joint press conference, Jaishankar reiterated India’s backing for the Philippines in upholding its sovereignty, stressing the importance of closer cooperation between the two countries in shaping the evolving global landscape.
Responding to questions about India’s stance on expanding defense cooperation with the Philippines, Jaishankar emphasized the need to consider such collaboration on its own merits, independent of specific situations. He highlighted the natural progression of bilateral relations, with defense and security cooperation emerging as key areas of interest.
Jaishankar underscored the significance of maritime security and safety for all nations, pointing out India’s export of BrahMos missiles to the Philippines, marking the country’s first customer for these advanced weapons.
The partnership between India and the Philippines also holds broader significance within the context of engagement with ASEAN. Jaishankar reaffirmed India’s strong support for ASEAN centrality, cohesion, and unity, aligning with its Act East Policy and Indo-Pacific vision.
China’s expansive claims in the South China Sea have been a source of contention, with multiple countries, including the Philippines, asserting counterclaims. Manalo accused China of obstructing Philippine ships from supplying troops in the area, highlighting the importance of upholding international law and regulations.
Both India and the Philippines are committed to a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific region. They aim to intensify cooperation in defense and security, underscoring their shared commitment to a rules-based international order.
Jaishankar’s visit coincided with the arrival of the Indian Coast Guard ship Samudra Paheredar in Manila Bay, showcasing India’s maritime capabilities and its commitment to addressing marine pollution in the ASEAN region. The visit aims to strengthen bilateral cooperation with the Philippine Coast Guard through professional exchanges, joint exercises, and capacity-building initiatives.
Overall, Jaishankar’s visit and the presence of the Indian Coast Guard ship underscore the deepening ties between India and the Philippines, rooted in shared democratic values and a commitment to regional stability and prosperity.
